Forget Fishing…Teach a child to bead!

An abstract from an article that appeared in The Mercury, Wednesday 3 August 2011:

“STILL on a high after being selected for the awardwinning Old Mutual Legends Programme, the Jewels of Hope organisation will boast its own stall at the World Methodist Conference which starts at Durban’s International Convention Centre (ICC) tomorrow. Jewels of Hope is an NGO which empowers vulnerable children in various locations across South Africa, including the KwaZulu-Natal capital, Pietermaritzburg. Here, a group of primary and high school youngsters meets once a week to share a meal, learn lessons from the Bible and earn an income through crafting necklaces, bracelets and earrings.”

“Making gold from glitter”

An abstract from an article that appeared in The Witness,Tuesday, 2 August 2011:

“Young people have an almost biological destiny to be hopeful.” He could have been talking about the teenagers taking part in the Jewels of Hope project in Phayiphini. Hope for the future is precisely what members of the Prestbury Methodist Church have instilled in two groups of youngsters, aged between 12 and 16 years old.

Easter Camp – April 2011

Jewels of Hope successfully organized a seaside camp for its child beneficiaries from 27 April to 2 May 2011. 59 children and 19 adult trainers attended the camp. Most of the children have been saving R25 each month throughout the year so that they paid the first R250 of the camp fee themselves. Thank you to all whose generous donations and hard work made this camp possible!
